For many years, the galaxy was a peaceful place. After the merciless war between Terrans and the Hegemony, all the major spacefaring species have gone to great lengths to prevent events from repeating themselves. Nevertheless, tensions are growing among the seven major species and within the Galactic Council. A confrontation seems inevitable.

In Eclipse, players become the leaders of vast interstellar civilizations and wrestle with their rivals in eight rounds for galactic supremacy. In each round, players grow their civilization by exploring and colonizing new space sectors, researching technologies, and expanding their space fleet. After the eighth round, the winner is the player who gained the most points by winning battles, diplomatic alliances, control of sectors and monoliths, discoveries, and technological achievements.
